I'm worried about this car size, I believe Mercedes are merging SLK with SL and calling it the new SL.

The R129 SL actually lost in a head to head car and driver test with the Cadillac Allante back in 1989.

I also think that the R231 has the worst side profile of all SLs. The front overhang looks terrible. The R232 looks so much more sporty and seems to be a true 911 competitor rather than a heavy comfort oriented cruiser. I like the new approach much more.

for some strange reason, BMW's sportiest models (6/now 8 Coupe, Z4/Supra) have the longest front overhangs of the range. i don't know why. same goes for most Japanese, British and even Italian RWD cars. i really don't know why.

Some of it is because a) the design similarities to the F/L R230, b) that front overhang, and c) the interior was reliant on the outgoing interior design language, and at that price-point, it didn't make as much sense. That said, I do agree the amount of hate is a bit unreasonable, as I'd be happy driving this with the top down on a coastal highway. Then again, I'd prefer the S cabriolet over this.

Guys you don’t even notice that front overhang in person. You rarely approach a car from that perspective to see that. Overhang was not the R231’s issue lol.

Long bonnet yes. But nothing else is lovely about the design IMO…

Yes indeed. For example, further evidence that beautiful automobiles can be created by M-B design teams after all. I have a hunch that this SL, for me, will render the EQS nothing more than a distant moment of disappointment. The W/V223 is very, very good. This SL looks to be...magnificent.
